In promoting a uniform policy, we understand that discrimination based on the equality Act 2010’s protected characteristics is unacceptable. We do not discriminate in our dress code on the basis of:

• Age
• Disability
• Gender reassignment
• Race
• Religion or belief
• Sex
• Sexual orientation

Pregnancy and maternity

The Parent Council, Year Group Councils and the Senior Leadership Team believe that the wearing of school uniform:

• Instils a sense of identity with the school
• Reinforces good behaviour
• Prevents peer group pressure to conform to the latest fashions
• Clearly identifies that the pupil is a member of the school community when issues of school security are under discussion. It is important for the staff to be able to identify quickly any person who may be in school and not a member of the school community.

All clothing, including coats and anoraks, should be marked both conspicuously and inconspicuously with your child’s name. Your child’s school bag and the covers of all their books should be clearly marked.

For physical education, pupils are requested to wear:

Gym shoes or training shoes
Black t-shirt
Navy blue or dark shorts

There are forms of dress which are unacceptable in school, such as items of clothing which:

• Potentially, encourage factions (such as football colours);
• Could cause offence (such as anti-religious symbolism, homophobic, biphobic or transphobic language, or political slogans);
• Could cause health and safety difficulties, such as loose fitting clothing, dangling earrings etc – please note that there is a request that all jewellery is removed prior to undertaking physical education activities;
• Are made from flammable material – for example shell suits in practical classes;
• Could cause damage to flooring;
• Carry advertising, particularly for alcohol to tobacco;
• Could be used to inflict damage on other pupils or be used by others to do so.

Under no circumstances will pupils be deprived any education benefits as a result of not wearing school dress and, in particular, pupils will not be denied access to examinations as a result of not wearing school dress.

Pupils will be asked to remove unacceptable items of clothing where appropriate.

In addition, transgender and non-binary young people will not be discriminated against for choosing to wear uniform which aligns with their gender identity or expression.

Clothing grants will be paid to parents/carers whose children attend a school managed by the East Dunbartonshire Council and who get one of the following benefits:

• Income Support 
• Job Seeker’s Allowance – Income Based
• Employment and Support Allowance – Income Based 
• Universal Credit with a monthly earned income of no more than £726 
• Child Tax Credit only (i.e. not with Working Tax Credit) with an income of less than £18,725 
• Both Child and Working Tax Credit with an income between £8,717 and £18,725 
• Support Under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 
• Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction (please note this is not a discount)

Making an Application:

There is a new combined online application form for school clothing grants, free school meals and free nursery meals on the East Dunbartonshire council website

Once you have submitted your application you will receive a confirmation email and a reference number which should be used in all correspondence
